Want to make styling your hair an easier process? At Elevate Salon Institute (ESI), Chubbuck we know styling your hair can be a hassle. That’s why we’ve curated a list of six hair styling tips to make your life easier. Check out these six routine-changing tips below!
Know Which Brushes to Use
In the world of hair brushes, there are many to choose from. Synthetic bristle brushes, natural bristle brushes, detangling brushes, paddle brushes, teasing brushes, vented brushes, round brushes! It can be difficult to choose which is best for you. It’s all about figuring out what works best for your hair type. If you’ve got unruly, long hair, try a detangling brush. Want a weekly blowout? Use a thermal round brush to give your hair volume and shine. For extra volume, try a teasing brush with boar bristles instead of a comb. Once you figure out which brush works for you, styling your hair is easier.
Distribute Product Evenly
When it comes to applying hair product, even distribution is key. It’s easy to apply too much or too little product. Typically, you never need more than about a dime-sized amount of most products like shampoo, conditioner, pomade, or hair oil. Rub the product between your hands to ensure it’s distributed through the entire length of your locks. This way you won’t weigh down parts of your hair with product and the product will be used more effectively.
Properly Use Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo can be a lifesaver if you know how to use it correctly. As you use dry shampoo, make sure you’re not spraying too close to the scalp, as this will result in a chalky white residue. Using too much dry shampoo can make your hair look dull and discolored. Also, make sure you’re only using dry shampoo at the roots. This is where hair tends to get most greasy, so if you use dry shampoo on the ends of your hair it can make it look stiff and dry.
Figure Out the Curling Iron
Curling irons can create amazing styles, but let’s be real, they can be hard to get the hang of. A good rule of thumb is choosing smaller barrels for medium and short hair and larger barrels for long hair. However, make sure the barrel isn’t too big. If it’s too much for your hair length, the curls aren’t going to hold. You can create tighter curls to begin with and brush through them so they’ll relax. There are also different ways to hold the curling iron depending on what type of wave you want. For volume, heat the root first and hold the curling iron perpendicular to the section of hair. If you want glamorous curls, wrap all the hair around the barrel. Looking for beachy waves? Leave the ends uncurled and start lower. There’s a perfect curl for everyone, so take the time to experiment!
Turn Up the Volume
Does getting voluminous hair seem impossible sometimes? Let us help you out. The first easy step to avoiding limp, lifeless locks is changing your part. Flipping your part to the opposite side will create instant volume at the top of your head. Another tip is back-combing or back-brushing your hair. This doesn’t mean excessive back-combing circa the 80s. Just gently back-comb or brush the roots and apply some hairspray for extra lift. You can also use root-boosting products and blow dry your hair upside down to add some lift, structure, and body. Volume boosting shampoos and conditioners are a good way to encourage volume.
Use Texturizing Products
A great way to make your hair more interesting is using texturizing products. Sea salt sprays, texturizing powders, and mousse are all great examples. These products not only give hair volume, they add more movement in general. If your hair is straight and fine, scrunching in some sea salt spray is a great way to create a subtle beachy look. Got curls? Try a curl defining product. Want to hold a style? Pomade is your best friend. Whichever you choose, texturizing product is a great way to jazz up lifeless hair.
